Commodore Business Machines introduced its first true PC in 1977. The Commodore PET (Personal Electronic Transactor) 2001 was announced at the West Coast Computer Faire and was very warmly received by the press and public alike. Commodore went on to improve the PET line over the course of several years.
The Commodore PET 8032 in my collection is one of the later variants of the PET line. It had an 80 column display and a full 32k of RAM to run programs on its ROM based basic.
The PET chassis flipped up like a cars hood to expose the circuitry and power supply beneath the keyboard and monitor.
Here is a closeup of the PETs monochrome screen which is as fresh and bright as the day it was manufactured.

I still have a similar one sitting around. It's the Pet 2001 32n, which had the large Keyboard of the 8032, but the smaller 40 col. Monitor. I've been programming for a living now since 1983 and this was my first computer. $1,200 with the External Tape drive and the optional memory that brought it up to 32K. Not much memory by today's standards, but it made you write very efficient code.

I used many of these when I taught computer literary and programming (BASIC and COMAL). COMAL was the official language of Scandanavian countries and thanks to Len Linsay of Wisconsin I was able to turn my 8032 into an 8096 by adding a COMAL rom board. I used a dual floppy (5 1/4) for storage and created a report card and attendance software package for a high school in St. Louis. This plus a Centronics 800 printer did all the work.

Can anyone help me to get my Pet 4016 working. Boots up fine: normal info about Basic etc. Blinking cursor. The keyboard does not work. I've taken apart and cleaned the contacts - nothing. I have tried shorting the pins of the keyboard connector on the motherboard but still nothing.
Thanks,

This brings back some memories. My high school had a computer lab back in the mid 80's full of these. I remember learning a little Basic and playing a couple of very cool games. One game was a mystery/puzzle game you solved by typing commands like open door and reading the response. The other game was both graphical and command based. You would summon forms of weather to blast away your opponents building. I can't beleive there are still some working models out there.

Holy Cow!
That was my very first computer, back in 1986!
Mine was flashed in 1979, and it had the tape
recorder and a very heavy dot matrix printer. It
eventually died back in 1988 when the screen
only showed a horizontal line...
Cheers!

Was looking for info on this model for a while, then found the model number in an old file on my system. Wondered if anyone knew of a good place to pick up a not working one. (always loved the case on these and thought it would be interesting to give new life to one by puting modern computer inside)

I bought a CBM 8032 computer from Ebay in the
summer of 2003 for $151.00, and it still works
like the day it left the factory.
It was one of the first things I put on the cart
when I moved in October 2004.
I later purchased some 5.25 IEEE-488 disk
drives for it, but have yet to find the
necessary cable to connect them to the CBM 8032.

I also have an 8032 with the added memory kit
that converted it into the 8096. After all these
years, I must part with it (wife's orders). Is
anyone interested in an 8096 with an 8023P
printer plus the dual disk drive. There is
software (Silicon Office, and others)to go with
the plug-in ROMs. THe 8096 and printer are in
their original shipping boxes from Commodore.
Let me know if anyone is interested.

Like someone else here, I still have an 8096 business pet I used for years, with a ZRam board (cp/m) and 3 0r 4 8050 dual drives packed away. I had a break-in once in the office.. they left the pet but took the drive. So much different to- day... There was a place on Yonge St. (west side) (Below Lawrence if I recall correctly), I managed to find some used drives there at the time.. probably gone now... but it's worth a shot

Got four Pets in the Garage. They all worked
when they were relevent, and worked when I packed
them away. This week I unpacked them and
everyone of those Pets will not boot up.
I understand that contacts might be the problem.
Anyone else find this a problem too?

I bought a Commodore computer in 1980. It consists of an 8032 computer with 80 character screen, 2040 dual floppy drive and an NEC Spinwriter 5530 printer. I also have a 8023 tractor printer which I never used. I used the computer with Visicalc and Wordpro programs until last year. I have other programs and manuals to go with it. I would like to sell the set as a package. When I stopped using it, it still worked fine. Make an offer for the lot.

I also have an 8032 plus the external double 5.25 disk drives for it. Additionally I have two commodore 3032 PETs, one of which has an external speaker and a Computhink disk drive. I have plenty of software as these machines were my first computers. Additionally (icing on the cake) I have an original tractor feed printer. Now looking to offload - any interest out there?

Oh, my God... I LOVE this computer... There are
lots os PC's that I wish: Commodore PET(any
model), Prologica CP-500 (It's a computer from
Brazil, and I live in Brazil, but it's very hard
to find...) and the Prologica Sistema700 (It's
brazilian, too), Apple Lisa, Apple Macintosh...
If you have anyone to sell, I'm interested in buy
it, but not forget: I live in Brazil, and the
ship coasts ar very expensive... and maybe... I
can't buy them... but send-me an e-mail to we can
talk... I have one IBM PC (8087) I love to make
COBOL, Clipper, Pascal, Basic, etc. programs...
Well... send me one e-mail...

That looks like an absolutely mint 8032 you've got there. I spent time working with these in the early 1980's, alongside the cheaper model - the 4016 (40 column screen & 16 Kb memory). Excellent, solid workhorses for word processing and spreadsheet work - far better IMHO than the Tandy TRS-80 range of the same time. If anyone in the UK has an unwanted one which need a good home . . . . Cheers, Kevin.

A spinoff was the SuperPET or SP-9000. It had an additional board with a Moto 6809 processor and 64k extra, and a serial port for comms. A software spinoff from Waterloo University (called Watcom) which developed languages like Waterloo Basic, Watfor, Watbol... also developed a set for this computer. It was widely used in universities to teach programming. The Toronto Pet User's Group put together another board with an MMU so it could run OS-9 - a Unix work-alike (which is still around). Yep, a real multi-tasking OS in 96k with no hard drive necessary. Got two in my garage! (The CoCo had a 6809 and made OS-9 widespread a little later on).
